Youth Coastal Rowing Scheme
The Youth Coastal Rowing Scheme was developed by Releasing Potential in 2016 in response to what we saw as a need for leadership training for our outdoor education delivery staff that went beyond the coaching-driven qualifications already available.
YCRS responds to an increase in demand for coastal rowing activities from our students and for those supported by other charitable organisations in Hampshire and West Sussex; we found that available training courses did not recognise the requirements we expect as an organisation for both safe practice on the water and engagement with young people. YCRS offers training in rowing to young people as part of Releasing Potential School, but also offers a range of qualifications to professionals wanting to deliver rowing skills.
YCRS courses focus on water safety and leadership skills for those working in a range of contexts, including schools, youth organisations, outdoor centres and community projects. As industry leaders in outdoor education for young people with Special Educational Needs (including severe behavioural difficulties), we are the experts in delivering rowing training to suit the needs of any professional body working with young people. The Youth Coastal Rowing Scheme brings together the best practices recognised by the British Canoeing Union (BCU), the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and other related governing bodies.
YCRS is a framework for progression pathway for all candidates including young people and adults. The scheme focuses on three separate components:
- Youth: leadership skills and teaching styles
- Coastal: safety, risk assessment, and operational procedures
- Leadership: personal skills and practice
Having delivered the scheme for over two years, we have awarded paddle, rowing and stroke awards to over 300 young people, and delivered professional training to over 20 adults completing their YCRS Leadership course in 2017. The training has been developed around safe practice in both the St Ayles skiff and Skur 18ft Mini Gig.
YCRS courses are run from our purpose-built training facility at our Havant base of operations. The facility houses classrooms, and a training gym with rowing machines; we operate using our own fleet of rowing skiffs and we are currently fundraising for two purpose-built specialised skiffs for use with our students. These will be built by Skur Boats, and are both Skur Pioneer Mini Gig 18ft skiffs.
Our next YCRS leadership curses will run in April 2018. For all enquiries or to book a place, email us via firstname.lastname@example.org.
