Founded in 2001, Releasing Potential has offered bespoke alternative educational placements to children who have not thrived in mainstream schools, since its conception in Portsmouth by founder and CEO Mike King. From its bases of operation in Hampshire and West Sussex, the organisation has supported hundreds of young people with special educational needs, as well as children who are emotionally vulnerable or have been sexually exploited. Now in its sixteenth year, Releasing Potential has just achieved Independent School status after passing its OFSTED inspection with flying colours. A major milestone in its history and a testament to passion and talent of its exceptional team, the Releasing Potential School is now accepting referrals for the 2017 autumn term.
Releasing Potential offers customised full and part time learning programmes through both small group and 1:1 provision for children aged 11-18 with complex educational needs. Whether through outdoor activities and adventure, personal and social development, or vocational training and qualifications, we support our students to be the best they can be, and to contribute positively to the Releasing Potential family and the wider social world. Our philosophy is to care for – and we are never afraid to say ‘love’ – our students, providing for their social, emotional and physical wellbeing and encouraging them to believe in themselves despite the challenges or rejections they may have previously faced.
We are proud of our students’ achievements whether academic or personal, and take a holistic approach to ensuring their health, safety and wellbeing while encouraging the sorts of managed risks that lead to breakthroughs with the most hard-to-reach young people. This approach underpins everything that we do, enabling us to make progress with young people for whom success looks very different to the models of achievement offered by traditional schools.
Our students progress to a range of educational or vocational placements, and our sixth form offers a safe environment to students who need extra time before making the transition to work or further education. Recent achievements by previous students include presenting to the royal family at Windsor Castle, passing out from the Royal Navy at the top of the class, and joining our team of tutors here at Releasing Potential!
